The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named Pennsylvania Highlands freshman Jake Oglesby the Division III Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for January 22-28.
Jake Oglesby
Oglesby (Melbourne, Florida) averaged 24.3 points per game while shooting 63 percent from the floor in three contests during the week, as the Black Bears posted a perfect 3-0 record.
In a win over Point Park Developmental Team on January 23, Oglesby tallied 47 points, breaking the school record previously held by Joziah Wyatt-Taylor (46). He also set a new school mark by making 13 three-point field goals in a game.
“It’s a great feeling to get this award,” Oglesby stated. “With all the time I’ve spent in the gym, to see it pay off means a lot. I’m thankful for my teammates for being supportive, and I hope we can keep winning games.”
Oglesby became the fifth men’s basketball player in school history to earn a National Player of the Week honor, joining Joziah Wyatt-Taylor, Tim Biakapia, Matt Forbes, and Delonte Fennell.
“We are proud of Jake for earning this honor,” stated Sue Brugh, Director of Student Activities & Athletics. “I haven’t seen many kids work harder than him. He’s always in the gym improving. He brings great pride to those who have worn the Black Bear uniform before him.”
Through 23 games, Oglesby has averaged 8.8 points per game on 43 percent shooting, including 34 percent on three-pointers.
Pennsylvania Highlands Community College is hosting its Spring Admissions & Athletics Open House on Monday, February 17. This event will take place at the College’s Richland Campus, as well as its locations in Blair, Centre County, Ebensburg, and Somerset.
“If you’re considering starting classes in the fall, or just want to get a jump start with summer classes, this is a great time to see how your local community college can benefit you,” stated Matthew Bodenschatz, Director of Recruiting & Admissions.
Attendees will go through the admissions and financial aid processes, learn about activities, academics, and athletics, take a tour, and have one-on-one conversations with an admissions counselor to discuss their futures.
Those who attend will also get the chance to connect with a knowledgeable faculty member who specializes in teaching courses in their specific area of study. The Richland Campus is scheduled to have three-to-four faculty members, while others will have one or two.
Those who fill out a survey upon attending will be entered in a drawing to win a $250 scholarship.
Community Education at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College has released its Spring 2025 class schedule. These personal enrichment classes will run from March 12 to June 3.
This non-credit slate offers 28 classes across five subjects: Arts & Crafts, Computers, Food & Baking, Spirits, and Career Training. Attendees can also choose from five bundled package options, allowing them to participate in multiple or all related classes at a discounted rate.
“These classes offer people the chance to gain some new experiences,” stated Matthew Pudliner, Pennsylvania Highlands Continuing Education Manager. “Participants enjoy spending quality time with friends and family, and often, large groups attend together, making the experience even more enjoyable for everyone. These classes also foster connections, with many attendees forming new friendships along the way.”
Since the fall, several exciting new classes have been added to the schedule. These include three Cricut classes, two computer classes, and a class dedicated to scone making.
Additionally, two themed mixology classes – “Red, White, & Blue” and “Star Wars” – have been introduced. Please note that all mixology classes are exclusively for participants aged 21 and over.
Attendees can register for each class up to one week before the start date.

First National Bank’s Senior Vice President and Regional Credit Officer, Greg Winger, recently presented a $3,000 donation to the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation. This contribution will be directed towards the College’s Educational Income Tax Credit (EITC) fund, further supporting its mission and initiatives.
This generous donation will empower the bank and other institutions to contribute to the educational initiatives offered by the College. By maintaining its EITC status and with the support of this exceptional contribution, Penn Highlands will be able to provide classes at a reduced price for students in the Accelerated College Education (ACE) Program and those enrolled in dual enrollment.
“First National Bank’s donation to the EITC program illustrates our shared commitment to fostering community growth and providing valuable opportunities,” stated Carole VanMeter, Director of the Foundation. “This support ensures that we can continue to offer affordable, high-quality education, empowering students to become competent and impactful members of our community.”
EITC supports high school students by offering the opportunity to enroll in college-level courses. Through this program, students can earn credits and gain insight into the potential futures that Penn Highlands can provide them with.
“First National Bank is pleased to continue our long-standing support of Penn Highlands’ mission and its students,” stated Winger, who also serves as Chairperson of the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Board of Trustees.
Since 2023, the EITC Program has received over $30,000 in funding, enabling the College to provide over 2,000 participating students with more than 7,000 credits at discounted rates.
