Pennsylvania Highlands Community College is happy to announce the appointment of Richard Bukoski to the full-time, tenure track position of Instructor, Communication and Media Studies at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College beginning this fall.
Richard, known as Rick Shepard on radio and television since 1984, is currently employed as News Director and Copywriter at Forever Broadcasting in Johnstown. Rick was an assistant news producer and on-air talent at WJAC-TV and also operated the Central Pennsylvania Radio Reader – a reading service for the visually challenged in the region.
Rick holds a BA in Communications from Edinboro University, an MA in Adult Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Communications Media and Instructional Technology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Rick will serve as lead faculty for the newly created Communication Studies and Media Production programs.
Ellis and Gladys Griffith have become the third donors in Huntingdon County to create a scholarship fund at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. The Griffith Family Scholarship will provide funds for a graduate of Tussey Mountain High School to attend Penn Highlands Huntingdon. Mr. Griffith is the former superintendent of Juniata Valley School District and served as the Director of the former Huntingdon Vo-Tech. He currently serves on the Penn Highlands Huntingdon Advisory Council and as a member of the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation Board of Directors.
Pennsylvania Highlands Community College has been operating in Huntingdon County since 2009 and moved into its permanent location on Margy Drive in 2011. “Ellis and his family have been supporters of Penn Highlands from the start.” said College President Dr. Walter Asonevich. “I don’t know that we could ever find someone as dedicated and committed to our efforts in Huntingdon County as Ellis Griffith.”

Pennsylvania Highlands Community College happily announces that Jessica Hanes Barron, Computer Science Instructor, was selected to present at the 2013 Faculty Development Institute, which will be held at the Community College of Allegheny County on June 24th and 25th.
The Faculty Development Institute attracts faculty from Community Colleges across the state of Pennsylvania and beyond. Jessica, of Boswell, and her colleague, Adam Wasilko (Duquesne University), will discuss the uses of Instructional Gaming in advancing STEM education. Recent reports by the United States National Academies have prompted faculty to seek more effective ways to help students become competitive in the STEM fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Their presentation will offer faculty practical ways to incorporate gaming into their STEM classes.

Larry brings extensive experience in Career Services having served as Director of Career Services and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Career Services at Mount Aloysius since 1994. He holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and an M.A. in Student Personnel Services from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Larry will lead the College’s Career Services efforts in two main areas in accordance with our Title III grant. The first area consists of assisting students in developing and implementing sound academic and career plans. The second area deals with strengthening the College’s relationships with regional employers to increase student internship and employment opportunities.
